I love any late night events that takes place at art galleries or museums. I always get the sense that I’m not meant to be there drinking around historically important things and not really paying attention to the art. The Art Gallery of Ontario’s First Thursdays is a perfect example of that.
First Thursdays, as the name would suggest, occurs on the first Thursday of every month. It is a combination of music, DJs, art and culture all under one impressive roof. It runs from 7.30pm -11pm and tickets sell out as it is extremely popular, so buying the $12 advance tickets would be smart ($15 at the door).
The installations were great and there were lots of interactive pieces to get your hands stuck into. There was also more bizarre entertainment, for example getting you fortune read and sitting in tents and speaking with random jesus looking people on a rug on the floor and all this could be done with an alcoholic beverage in hand. I wasn’t actually drinking but the fact I could and there were people around me that were, made me feel like a cultured trendy so and so.
We spent almost 3 hours there, soaking up our vibrant, cool surroundings. Although the conversation between my friends and I would usually be no more complex than ‘Do you like that one?’ ‘Yeah, nice colours’, it was still great fun and worthwhile spending $12 on a experimental and fun night. WARNING – this event draws in an uber hipster crowd. Though in no way pretentious, I would be prepare yourself for a heavy amount of beanie hat / geek glasses folk.
